How to Transcribe a Private or Unlisted YouTube Video
Updated 24 Apr 2026 · TranscriptX editorial
Quick answer: Unlisted: copy the URL and paste it on TranscriptX — it works the same as a public video. Private: we can’t access it (YouTube requires login). Switch it to Unlisted, transcribe, switch back.
YouTube has three visibility settings. Two work with us. One doesn’t.
The 60-second answer
Unlisted: paste the URL on TranscriptX. Private: flip to Unlisted for a minute, transcribe, flip back.
Which YouTube settings work
- Public — works.
- Unlisted — works. Anyone with the link can watch, including us.
- Private — doesn’t work. Requires a Google login.
- Members-only — doesn’t work. Paid auth wall.
- Age-restricted — usually doesn’t work. Signed-in adult account required.
Step-by-step — Unlisted
On the video page, click Share and copy the URL. Paste it on transcriptx.xyz. No prompt, no sign-in.
Step-by-step — Private video you own
Open YouTube Studio. Find the video. Under Visibility, switch from Private to Unlisted. Save. Copy the link. Paste on TranscriptX. Once the transcript is done, flip visibility back to Private.

Common things that break
- “Video unavailable” on an Unlisted video. The owner may have deleted it or switched back to Private.
- Age-restricted content. Login wall, even on Unlisted.
- Region-locked Unlisted. Rare but possible if the owner set it.
- Premiere hasn’t aired. Nothing to transcribe yet — come back after the premiere.
