How to Transcribe a Panopto Video

Updated 24 Apr 2026 · TranscriptX editorial

Quick answer: If the Panopto video has a public share link (Anyone with the link), paste the URL on TranscriptX. If it's SSO-locked to your org, you'll need to ask the instructor for a public link or download the video locally first.

Step-by-step

1) Check the share setting

Open the Panopto video → Share (or Settings if it's your own video). Confirm access is set to Anyone with the link, not Signed-in users only.

2) Copy the viewer URL

Format is YOUR_ORG.hosted.panopto.com/Panopto/Pages/Viewer.aspx?id=GUID. The Embed URL also works but the Viewer URL is more reliable.

3) Paste on TranscriptX

Drop on transcriptx.xyz. Lectures tend to be long — 1-2 hours is normal — so expect a few minutes of processing.

FAQ

Doesn't Panopto have built-in captioning?

It's an add-on that requires admin enablement and costs extra per minute. Most institutions don't enable it on every video. We're the workaround when Panopto's captions aren't available.

My org uses Panopto through Canvas / Moodle / Blackboard — does that matter?

Only the share setting matters. If the video is "Anyone with the link", the LMS wrapper is irrelevant — paste the Panopto viewer URL directly.

What if my instructor won't make it public?

Last resort: download the video (Panopto has a download option if enabled), upload to Drive with Anyone-with-the-link, and paste that Drive URL instead. See our Google Drive guide.
