How to Transcribe a Whereby Meeting Recording
Updated 24 Apr 2026 · TranscriptX editorial
Quick answer: Whereby records locally to your computer when you click Record during a meeting. You get an MP4 file. Upload it to Google Drive with "Anyone with the link" access, paste the Drive URL on TranscriptX.
Step-by-step
1) Find the MP4 on your computer
Whereby saves recordings to your Downloads folder by default. Look for a .mp4 with the date + meeting name.
2) Upload to Google Drive (or Dropbox)
See our Drive guide. Upload the MP4, set sharing to Anyone with the link, copy.
3) Paste on TranscriptX
transcriptx.xyz → paste.
Common things that break
- Recording wasn't saved. Whereby only records when you click Record. If nobody did, there's no file.
- Multi-participant recording quirks. Whereby sometimes generates per-participant tracks instead of one merged video. If you have multiple MP4s, pick the one with the merged audio, or upload the one you want transcribed.
- Browser crash during record. If your browser crashed mid-meeting, the recording may be corrupted. Try the Whereby "download crash recovery" feature first.
- Whereby Embedded / custom deployments. Whereby Embedded (their SaaS for developers) can route recordings to cloud storage directly. Grab the URL from your own cloud destination.

FAQ
Does Whereby have built-in transcription?
Yes — they added a beta transcription feature. If it works for you, you don't need us. If you want cleaner text or SRT export, paste through TranscriptX.
Is Whereby better for privacy than Zoom?
They're browser-based with some privacy advantages, but once you've saved a recording and uploaded it to Drive, the privacy story is the same as Zoom.
What about very short Whereby meetings (under 5 minutes)?
Transcribes fine. Short files process quickly.
