How to Transcribe a Wistia Video
Updated 24 Apr 2026 · TranscriptX editorial
Step-by-step
1) Find the Wistia video URL
If you own the video, open it in your Wistia dashboard and copy the public share URL. If you're watching an embedded Wistia video on a third-party site, click the player's title — it usually links to the media page at owner.wistia.com/medias/....
2) Remove password protection temporarily
If the video is password-protected, you'll need to remove the password for the retry — our servers can't type it. Re-add the password after.
3) Paste on TranscriptX
Drop the URL on transcriptx.xyz, hit Transcribe.
Common things that break
- Password-protected video. Wistia's password wall requires typed input. Remove the password, transcribe, re-add it.
- Domain-restricted embed. Wistia lets you restrict playback to specific domains. If the restriction is on, our servers can't play the video from outside those domains.
- Private Channel or Series. Channels set to private require viewer auth. Not supported — contact the owner for a public share link.
- Captions paywalled on your plan. Wistia's own captions are a paid add-on. This is actually why most Wistia users come to us — skip that fee.

FAQ
Is Wistia's built-in caption feature different?
Wistia's captions cost extra per video on most plans. We run Whisper for a flat subscription fee — typically cheaper if you have more than a handful of videos.
Does this work for Soapbox recordings uploaded to Wistia?
Yes. Soapbox videos uploaded into Wistia get the same share URL pattern. Paste and go.
What about Wistia Live?
Only after the live stream ends and the recording is saved to the library. Live events in progress can't be transcribed.
